Can sociology be related to market research?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

I have just graduated from univeristy with a major in Sociology.
I’m currently trying look for a permanent job which I hope can be related to Sociology. I’m looking at positions for market research and was wondering how can I convince the company that a Sociology graduate can be considered for a market research job. I’m also open to more suggestions regarding career opportunites for Sociology graduates besides teaching. Thanks!

The research methods used for the primary market research is identical to social science quantitative research methods. If you have a good foundation in methods and statistics, there’s nothing holding you back from a career at a market research company.

How much to charge for Market Research Services?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

I am considering a home-business in the Market Research Field. I have over 10 yrs experience. I started as an interviewer and worked my way up to Manager of a focus group facility. I then worked for someone else out of my home 10 yrs ago, for about 3 yrs., getting cost estimates for focus groups, writing screeners, daily reports etc. Basically, the moderator would call me and I would take it from there. The moderator would get daily reports and conduct the actual focus group(s). Since I have been out of the industry for 10 years, I’m not sure how much to charge my clients. My clients are contracted focus group moderators who work with companies like Kraft. I don’t want to charge too much, but I have to cover my costs and I want to make it worth my efforts.

Figure out what your costs are. That is important. You need to decide who much money it will cost you to do business (rent, advertising, office expenses etc.), what you want to pay yourself (be reasonable), and what profit you want to have to go back into the business. I have a consulting aspect to my company and that is how I came up with my "retail" numbers. We charge by the hour for smaller, short term projects. We also provide any client with a package, flat rate charge for more complex projects or if they request it.

Doing Market Research is one important task in Internet Marketing. This is the second step of the MasterListBuilder system- a step by step internet marketing process created by internet marketing guru, Joel Christopher.

Doing your market research will give you the ability to determine the hot items in the market today. These products and services may not be your own. It may be someone else’s. Joel Christopher advises beginners in internet marketing to start as an affiliate.

Before you decide on what product or service you would want to affiliate yourself in, you should first determine the hot items available in the market. Visiting search sites like Google.com, Googletrends.com, Wordtracker.com and Goodkeywords.com may help you in determining which items you would like to venture in internet marketing. Finding the best selling books and most searched topics in Amazon.com may also help you in achieving effective internet marketing.

how does one do market research if they wanna get into a particular industry?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I wanted to start an game studio, for pen and paper RPGs, and wanted to know how to research that market.

You start your research from a general perspective of the industry, and narrow it down to a micro-market.

First you have to check the industry that you want to enter in. How are other game studios for pen and paper RPGs faring? How much do they earn?

Once you establish that the industry has potential, look into your micro-market. Look at the neighborhood where you plan to set up that studio. Are there enough customers who would come to your studio to give you business? Perhaps you can do a survey among potential customers in that neighborhood.

When you see that the industry is doing well and that you have a potential market — enough to make your business successful — then go for it!

How does market research apply to property management?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

My mom wants to get into property management and the job descriptions all include "market research"? What kind of market research would you do for apartment buildings? She was a property manager for 3 buildings for 27 years and she never did or even heard of such a thing. What kind of background do you have to have?

Market research in this case means a basic knowledge of the housing market (rentals) in your area. It might include knowing strategies to improve a complex, or buildings profitability, or how to persuade the tenants to be more timely in their payments. It’s not any one skill set, but several.

In other words, the days of simply collecting rent are over. But if your mom is a quick study, she might be able to persuade them to give her a try, based on her previous experience.

Good luck to her!

Where do you find market research statistics?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

I’m currently in the process of starting my own small freelance businesses and writing a business plan. I’m trying to do market research and find statistics in my geographical area, but I’m not finding much. My local Chamber of Commerce didn’t have any statistics, and I’m at a loss as to where to look online. Besides www.sba.gov, are there any other statistics websites that would be of value to a small business?

Yes… your STATE’s Department of Commerce… the SBTDC of your local community college… AND…your area’s PIC ( private industry council)…….
