How can I take part in Market Research?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

I am interested in taking part in market research, mainly where I can ‘freebies’ or rewards for doing so. Any idea where to start?

Thanks in advance!

To make sure you find reputable companies, you might want to start with industry organizations like Quirks, MRA (Marketing Research Association), Blue Book.org, Impulse Rating, etc. Start by looking for companies in your city. Check out their website and see if you can sign up online. If not, they may let you call in to give your information over the phone. Once you are on a database, when there are studies that you may qualify for the company will contact you.

Although the information the company asks of you may seem very detailed, it is to help them find you when they have market research looking for, say, a Caucasian female, age 18-25, has digital cable, a cat and shops at Ralphs. Acceptable things they ask are: date of birth, type of vehicle owned, number of kids, range of your household income. Not acceptible to ask is your social security number.

In addition to the above resources, you can go to this company below as well: www.q-insights.com. We are a national market research company.

Typically, for focus groups you are only allowed to participate once every six months. Other studies, such as filling out a questionnaire at a mall, doing an online or phone survey, etc., may differ depending on the study. To learn more about the industry, the MRA offers the most comprehensive industry standard guidelines.

How do you conduct market research?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

I am looking in to building an online business and allot of references tell you to conduct market research but I don’t know how to. My business would revolve around making youtube videos and making money through affiliate marketing.

Step1
Identify your research goal. Ask yourself if do you need to improve customer service or increase sales? Or are you looking for the right market for a new product?

Step2

To determine the demographics of your market use trade journals, marketing magazines, government reports and chamber of commerce market profiles.

These publications are helpful in providing data on purchasing trends that serve you a clue on the buying habits of your target market.

Step3
Be able to conduct mail and telephone surveys using randomly selected addresses and telephone numbers in your local area.

Step4
You should collect information from your existing customers. Using questionnaires, personal interviews and focus groups to get feedback on your products and services are of great help. If you do have a Web site for your business, start a chat room or message board and encourage customers to participate.

Step5
Try to observe customers at various points of contact in your business, including reception, sales, and customer service. Be watchful for glitches in your business operation and at the same time how your employees interact with the customers.

Step6

You should take time to analyze your sales records. If you know your best customers and most profitable products this can help you to better focus your marketing efforts.

Step7
Organizing the research data you have collected and be able to determine – or reevaluate – your marketing strategy based on the results of your research.

Can sociology be related to market research?

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

I have just graduated from univeristy with a major in Sociology.
I’m currently trying look for a permanent job which I hope can be related to Sociology. I’m looking at positions for market research and was wondering how can I convince the company that a Sociology graduate can be considered for a market research job. I’m also open to more suggestions regarding career opportunites for Sociology graduates besides teaching. Thanks!

The research methods used for the primary market research is identical to social science quantitative research methods. If you have a good foundation in methods and statistics, there’s nothing holding you back from a career at a market research company.

How much to charge for Market Research Services?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

I am considering a home-business in the Market Research Field. I have over 10 yrs experience. I started as an interviewer and worked my way up to Manager of a focus group facility. I then worked for someone else out of my home 10 yrs ago, for about 3 yrs., getting cost estimates for focus groups, writing screeners, daily reports etc. Basically, the moderator would call me and I would take it from there. The moderator would get daily reports and conduct the actual focus group(s). Since I have been out of the industry for 10 years, I’m not sure how much to charge my clients. My clients are contracted focus group moderators who work with companies like Kraft. I don’t want to charge too much, but I have to cover my costs and I want to make it worth my efforts.

Figure out what your costs are. That is important. You need to decide who much money it will cost you to do business (rent, advertising, office expenses etc.), what you want to pay yourself (be reasonable), and what profit you want to have to go back into the business. I have a consulting aspect to my company and that is how I came up with my "retail" numbers. We charge by the hour for smaller, short term projects. We also provide any client with a package, flat rate charge for more complex projects or if they request it.
